I get this question a lot when I book weddings and engagement sessions: what should we wear? What colors look best on camera? Of course, couples want to look their best for their engagement photos, and I've had some experience with this question, so I thought I'd write a small blog post about it to reference my couples to before our shoots! Here are some tips I tell my couples on how to prepare:
1. Choose clothing that is COMFORTABLE, and that you FEEL GOOD in. Do not pick something that you are not in love with and feel great in, because it will show in pictures that you are uncomfortable.
2. Choose colors that play up your features.. If you have green eyes, wear pretty greens and blues. If you have red hair, you probably shouldn't wear red, unless you can rock it!! I usually tell couples to stay away from black, unless you are looking for FORMAL photos. Black can be very dark and washed out in photos.
3. Coordinate your clothing between each other; MATCH but don't be matchy-matchy.
4. Pick clothing that compliments your location choice. You wouldn't wear a tux in a wheat field. Know your locations and dress accordingly to that space.
5. Bring multiple outfits! I love when couples have at least two choices, so that your photos show variety! I usually have my couples bring a fancier look, and a casual look, depending their session location choice.
6. Embrace color and textures. This also goes hand-in-hand with layering. I love texture, and visual features of outfits -- wear jewelry, scarfs, watches, belts, ect. Give visual interest to your photos with accessories!
7. Embrace your wedding colors - if you have purple in your wedding, maybe wear a shade of purple. Usually couples showcase engagement photos at their wedding receptions, so this is a great way to tie in your wedding colors!
Additional tips:
1. The best time to shoot outside is GOLDEN HOUR, which is usually 1 hour before the sun sets. This gives the magical light that is just so beautiful on skin tones. While it may be convenient to shoot at 12pm on a Saturday, the lighting is harsh, and it will not turn out the best. Either shoot early enough in the morning, for golden hour!
2. When picking out outfits, consider the color wheel -- you can't go wrong with colors that compliment each other!
3. Lastly ---- HAVE FUN. Even if you think you un-photogenic, have fun with your soon to be spouse. Grab each other, hold each other tight, giggle, kiss -- it makes the photos turn out great, and natural. If you aren't having a good time, it will show! Be a good sport, and have a great time! You only do this once ;)
If you every have questions about what to wear for your sessions, please ask me! I'd love to give you my input and help you pick something that you'll love and feel great in!
Thanks for reading!
Best,
Tracy
